Compare the Ram Hurricane Engines vs the HEMI V8
Since 2003, Ram trucks have proudly worn the HEMI badge, indicating some form of a V8 engine under the hood. With a history spanning from muscle cars to the early 1950s, it makes sense why the HEMI family of engines has such a legendary reputation. For the 2025 model year, the Ram 1500 is losing the HEMI option. Not all is lost, though, as this full-size pickup will gain the performance and efficiency of the Hurricane's inline-six engine.
What’s the Difference Between the Hurricane and HEMI engine?
The Hurricane engine offers a different approach to power and efficiency than the Ram 1500’s outgoing V8 engine. As a forced-induction engine, it offers better performance and efficiency than the 5.7-liter HEMI V8. With the high-output variant, the Ram can produce 540 horsepower. Compared to the HEMI’s output of 395 horsepower.
As truck enthusiasts just like you, we are sad to see the HEMI retired from the Ram 1500. But it is clear the brand is delivering a new engine that makes more power. Even if it does mean losing the experience of driving a vehicle with eight cylinders under the hood.

It is worth noting that the 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged Hurricane engine does have some areas where the HEMI V8 excels. With the new Hurricane engine, the towing capacity of the 2025 Ram 1500 is 11,570. That will be down from 12,750. At the same time, the gains in efficiency and overall performance should make up for a slightly lower towing capacity.
The combined EPA-estimated MPG is 21 mpg in some models.
